Why well-structured processes fail: The hidden dynamics that shape how work actually gets done (or doesn't)

Business Acumen

Back by popular demand, Julia Monaghan is returning to dive deeper into leadership and process development with a new session! If you enjoyed the past November 2025 session on Leading Through Complexity, but also if you weren't able to make it, you won't want to miss Why well-structured processes fail: The hidden dynamics that shape how work actually gets done (or doesn't).

Project managers are often asked to lead work through well-designed processes — with clear timelines, roles, and deliverables — and yet still find that projects stall, meetings drift, or decisions fail to stick. In these moments, the issue is rarely the structure itself. More often, breakdowns emerge from unspoken assumptions, misaligned expectations, unclear authority, or relational dynamics that the process was never designed to hold.

When these people-side dynamics go unnamed, even the strongest plans can unravel, leaving project managers caught between keeping work moving and responding to what is happening beneath the surface. The purpose of this session is to examine why well-structured processes still fall apart — not because of poor planning, but because of unaddressed human dynamics — and how to find solutions.

Grounded in the distinction between task and relational agendas, this session will support project managers in naming what is really happening inside projects and processes, and in developing practical ways to lead work that balances clarity, authority, and co-creation to drive stronger outcomes.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between task and relational agendas in projects and processes, and recognize how unaddressed dynamics can derail execution.
  • Identify common people-side breakdowns that undermine well-structured work, including misalignment, resistance, and unclear authority.
  • Use practical tools to design and lead processes that surface alignment, clarify decision-making, and balance efficiency with co-creation.
